Analysis of the entire genome (genomics) provides static information about the genes of an organism. In contrast, total protein analysis (proteomics) reflects the dynamic situation, providing information about the rate of expression and regulation of individual proteins within the cell. Clues as to the function of proteins in diverse cell processes can only be obtained if their structure and modifications or variations are fully understood. Recently, we learned to define important individual posttranslational protein modifications for function.
