Immunological accessory molecules are proteins expressed on the surface of immune cells that can modulate in a positive or negative manner the ability of the cell to develop or to perform one or more of its functions. Thus, accessory molecules are critical to the success or failure of controlling the immune response to foreign antigens such as infectious agents or organ transplants, the aberrant response to self-antigens as in the case of autoimmune disease or the response to tumours.
