19011994 American chemist who made fundamental contributions to many areas of science, including inorganic, organic and theoretical chemistry, biology and medicine. He was politically active, and spoke out loudly in support of world peace. In later years he attracted controversy with his advocacy of massive doses of vitamin C as a palliative for everything from the common cold to old age and cancer.
