Cell Invasion Assays

Cell invasion assays have been developed for quantitative study under well‐established in vitro conditions of the ability of cultured cells to penetrate biological barriers such as artificial basement membrane.

Keywords: tumour cell culture; invasion; matrigel; transwell

Figure 1.

Transwell invasion assay. The Transwell filter is coated with Matrigel (1). Cells, suspended in culture medium, are added to the upper chamber and culture medium to the lower chamber (2), and then incubated at 37°C for a defined period. The number of viable cells is quantified by the MTT method (3) and the resulting formazan crystals (4) in the two compartments are each dissolved in isopropanol and separately quantified colorimetrically (OD, optical density).
