Western blotting (immunoblotting) is a system for the immunological detection of specific proteins that have been transferred from a polyacrylamide gel to an immobilizing membrane. Proteins transferred to immobilizing filter membranes, such as nitrocellulose, are well suited to high-sensitivity solid-phase immunoassay detection techniques.
