Cornelis Bernardus van Niel (18971985), a Dutch-born microbiologist who worked in California for most of his life; he showed that a coherent science of general microbiology could provide a foundation for unifying the life sciences and his summer courses at Pacific Grove, California, have inspired many leading biologists; he proposed a simple model to rationalize green plant and bacterial photosynthesis.
